How To Respond When Someone Says I Love You and You’re Not Ready To Say It Back by Rachel Russo

Question: What do you do when someone says I love you and you’re not sure if you love them back? My boyfriend told me he loved me and it was kind of awkward, but I didn’t say it back. I still want to go out with him because we have a lot of fun and I like him a lot but I think I really hurt his feelings. What should I say?

Answer: Great question! First off: Good for you for not giving in to the pressure to say it back. Its definitely awkward when one person has stronger feelings first, but, remember, this is totally normal. A lot of people are in the same situation as you.

The relationship does not have to end because you don’t feel the exact same way. As long as your boyfriend knows that you really care for him and enjoy being with him, it is likely that he will want to keep seeing you.

Reassure him that you really like him–tell him the things that you appreciate him. Let him know that you aren’t quite ready to say it back yet, but that maybe you will be soon since he’s so awesome.
