Can Hypnosis Improve Academic Performance? By Dr. Steve G. Jones, Ed.D.

Students today are under a tremendous amount of pressure. There is a constant drive to improve their academic performance from parents, professors, friends, and even themselves. So much of their future lives and careers depend on the grades they achieve in the classroom.

Most students, when asked, will tell you that if they are struggling with maintaining peak performance and high grades it’s not because they have challenges understanding the material they are studying, it’s because of the relentless stress they feel as they strive to succeed. Unfortunately, the key to studying effectively is to be in exactly the opposite state of mind. To get the most out of their studies, students need to be relaxed and focused.

Hypnosis is a remarkable tool for helping stressed and often overworked students to relax and let go of stress, resulting in heightened concentration and improved creativity. In fact, many teachers and other school staff already use techniques that are considered to be a form of hypnosis in their everyday work. Most teachers will attempt to create a calm and quiet environment to help students relax before big tests. This improves concentration. Sports coaches will engage in energetic “pep talks” before a big game, repeating positive phrases and suggestions over and over to build confidence in players. All of these types of things are techniques of hypnosis.

In an Australian study conducted in 1991, researchers investigated the effects of cognitive-behavioral hypnosis on improving academic performance and reducing anxiety associated with test taking. One group received four hypnosis sessions while the control group received none. The results showed that the group, which had received hypnosis, showed significantly lower levels of anxiety and also improved their performance during test taking sessions. The positive effects were still evident six weeks later when follow-up examinations were conducted.

If you, or someone you know, are struggling to keep stress low and academic performance high, hypnosis can help to achieve both goals. Hypnosis can help you to reduce your stress and anxiety, maintain your confidence, and improve your concentration. These are all things that will greatly benefit students at any stage of their education.
